If you’ve visited the museum anytime in the last couple of years, you’ve likely heard about the many Wheel-Herald photographs that were donated to the Murray County Historical Society.
Volunteers have already done a tremendous amount of work identifying the people, places and events pictured in the collection. But there are still hundreds of photographs waiting to be identified — and we could use your help!
You Might Know the Answer!
Looking through an entire stack of photographs covering different decades and events can be a little daunting, so volunteers have been busy sorting many of the photos by subject.
There are all kinds of topics, including high school sports, community organizations, buildings, parades, weddings, engagements, band, choir, businesses and more.
Maybe you remember girls basketball or boys track. Perhaps you know about elementary school events, scouting, agriculture, pageants, proms or homecoming. Whatever part of Murray County history you know best, there may be a stack of photographs where your memories could help us fill in the blanks.
The collection includes photographs from throughout Murray County and its different school districts, so we’re looking for people with knowledge of communities all across the county.
Sometimes We Just Need One More Name
There is also a group of photographs where almost everything has already been identified. We may know the event, location and nearly everyone pictured — but we’re still missing that one last person or detail.
Sometimes all it takes is the right person looking at a photograph and saying, “I know who that is!”
You don’t have to be a historian or commit to identifying hundreds of photographs. Just stop in and work on the subjects, communities or time periods you know.
Every name, place and memory we can attach to these photographs helps preserve more of Murray County’s story for the future.
